IPIS is an independent research institute which focuses on Sub-Saharan Africa. Our studies concern three core themes: arms trade, exploitation of natural resources and corporate social responsibility.

  • April 2013 - In a new report commissioned by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), IPIS analyses the formalisation of artisanal mining in the DRC and Rwanda. While mineral production and trade have played an important role in financing armed groups and prolonging insecurity, artisanal mining is essential for local livelihoods. This report offers an overview of all major upstream initiatives (certification, tracing and due diligence) trying to ensure that mineral extraction and trade is not tainted by conflict in the Great Lakes Region.
